‍The Chinese Embassy in Washington, DC hosted a reception on Wednesday for National Day, as the country marks the 68th anniversary of its founding.

Several US lawmakers were among the attendees, as well as Jared Kushner and his wife Ivanka Trump, the son-in-law and daughter of US President Donald Trump. The couple are close advisers to the president.

It’s not the first time the glamorous first daughter has attended a reception at the Chinese embassy.

At a February party celebrating the country’s Lunar New Year, the embassy rolled out the red carpet for Ivanka and her five-year-old daughter who was dressed in red.

China’s Vice Premier Liu Yandong also attended the event.

The vice premier is in Washington for the China-US Social and Cultural Dialogue, one of the four dialogues agreed by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Trump when the two met at Mar-a-Lago, Florida in April.

Liu made a short speech at the reception and highlighted the Chinese government's efforts to improve the lives of its nearly 1.4 billion people, as well as the contributions it made to the development of China and indeed the development of the world.

But she said there’s still much that needs to be done.

The vice premier also stressed the importance of cooperating with the United States, as well as the importance of people-to-people exchanges.

On Thursday, Vice Premier Liu will take part in the formal dialogue in Washington, alongside US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
