MANILA, Aug.31(APD) – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said he hopes major government projects under his “Build, Build, Build” program accomplished before he leaves office in 2022. This was his message when he met yesterday with several business companies in the construction business who called on him in Beijing.

He met with local officials from Cavite and companies into the Sangley Point International Airport project. These companies are Cavite Holdings, China Communication Construction Co. (CCCC) and China Airport Construction Group Co., Ltd.

In a statement released from Beijing by the Presidential Communications Operations Office, President Duterte told the project proponents to finish the Sangley International Airport in two years.

“Whatever your plans, do it fast,” the PCOO statement quoted President Duterte. He added the project need to be completed before his term ends.

Construction delegates from the Philippines met with President Duterte in a separate courtesy call and expressed their full support for the government and suggested the crafting of a law that will ensure the continuity in the implementation of major government infrastructure projects.

They told President Duterte that they look at China as a source of new technologies and know-how to improve quality and minimize wastage.

Meanwhile, Trade and Industry Secretary Ramon Lopez said the institutionalization of government spending program through legislation would ensure continuity of big-ticket state projects.

Admittedly, the Philippines lags behind Asian neighbors in terms of infrastructure projects.

President Duterte said extortion activities by lawless elements remains one of the concerns of many contractors and assured them the government will do its role to address the problem.
