The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced a proposal on Tuesday to list the emperor penguin as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

What is putting this flightless bird at such risk?

Emperor penguins, which have distinctive golden head patches, are endemic to Antarctica.

The flightless seabirds breed on sea ice and are vulnerable to melting ice caused by rising temperatures.

The population size of the emperor penguins is predicted to decrease between 26 percent and 47 percent by 2050.

Melting sea ice is the primary threat to the species, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service warns.
