A day of violence in Israel and Palestine

Violence erupted in Israel and Palestine on Monday.

Gaza health officials said at least 20 people were killed, including 9 children in Israeli air strikes.

The Israeli strikes were in response to rockets fired by Hamas close to Jerusalem.

Hamas said it fired rockets after hundreds of Palestinians were hurt in clashes with Israeli security forces in Jerusalem.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the rockets crossed a "red line".

Air strikes and rocket fire continued into the night.

Israel's military said Palestinian militants had fired around 150 rockets with dozens intercepted by its missile defense systems.

Egypt, Qatar and the United Nations are working to stop the violence and have been in contact with the Hamas leader, Reuters reported.
