Five South Korean soldiers in a frontline unit were confirmed killed Saturday in a shooting spree accident, with five others wounded, local media reported.

A South Korean sergeant, surnamed Lim, who was standing guard at the Demilitarized Zone, fired K-2 guns at random against fellow South Korean sentries at around 8:15 p.m. local time, according to military officials cited by local media.

The rampage of firing happened at a general outpost (GOP) of the 22nd Division in Goseong, a northeastern county in Gangwon Province bordering the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Five soldiers were wounded and taken to the nearby military hospital. Among them, some sustained serious injury, raising possibilities for growing deaths.

The South Korean military was pursuing the sergeant who is at large with the K-2 gun and tens of live bullets.
