A number of powerful Democratic members on Friday called for the resignation of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo following damaging allegations of sexual harassment against the 63-year-old.

Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Jerrold Nadler, and other house members said in separate and joint statements that Cuomo should leave office following those accusations. They also took issue with his administration's handling of nursing homes during the pandemic.

The latest development comes a day after New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie authorized the Assembly Judiciary Committee to start an "impeachment investigation" into sexual misconduct allegations against Governor Andrew Cuomo.

"Governor Cuomo has lost the confidence of the people of New York," said Mr. Nadler, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and one of the highest-ranking members of Congress. "Governor Cuomo must resign."

Cuomo has denied the allegations as a smear campaign. Last week, he vowed not to step down because of them.

"It's damning to publicize allegations before you know that they are credible … Let the attorney general do her job," he said.
