Ina closely-watched speech detailing his policy on illegal immigration,Republicanpresidential nominee Donald Trump insisted that he will build a wall along the US-Mexico border to keep out illegal immigrants and will create a taskforce thatwill hunt undocumented immigrants to deport from the United States.

“We will build a great wall along the southern border!” Mr Trumptold a cheering crowd in Phoenix.“And Mexicowill pay for the wall, believe me,” he said.“Hundred per cent!”

In the speech on Wednesday night (Thursday morning Singapore time)that sought to clarify his controversial immigration policy, Mr Trump saidthe US has the right as a sovereign nation to choose immigrants that it thinks are the most likely to thrive and who love the country.

"Not everyone who seeks to join our country will be able to successfully assimilate - sometimes it's just not gonna work out. It's our right as a sovereign nation to choose immigrants that we think are the most likely to thrive and love us."

"Countless innocent American lives have been stolen because politicians have failed their duty to secure our borders and enforce our laws like they are to be enforced!" he said. "So many, many people. So sad."

Thebuildingof a wall along the border with Mexico was among the 10 measures Mr Trump outlined in his speech to deal with the problem of illegal immigration.

Another measure he proposed was thecreation of a deportation task force to deal withthe 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the US.

"Anyone who has entered the United States illegally is subject to deportation - that is what it means to have laws and have a country," he said.

“I am going to create a new, special deportation task force focused on identifying and quickly removing the most dangerous illegal immigrants in America, who have evaded justice, just as Hillary Clintonhas evaded justice.”

“Maybe they’ll be able to deport her!” he said to loud cheers.

The tycoon also proposedan "extreme" vetting process for countries including Syria and Libya.

“Applicants will be asked about their views on honour killings, respect for women and gays and other minorities,” he said. “Very, very few will slip through the cracks - hopefully none.”

“I call it extreme vetting! Extreme vetting! I want extreme! It’s going to be so tough,” he added.

Other measures include an operation to remove all immigrants who are criminals and to end amnesty to approximately five million illegal immigrants.”

Mr Trump's speech came just hours after he travelled to Mexico for a meeting with the PresidentEnrique Pena Nieto.

The presidential nominee said they did notdiscuss who would pay for his proposed wall along the US-Mexicoborder, despite his long-standing vow to compelMexicoto do so.

He and Mr Peña Nieto avoided direct confrontation in front of the cameras, airing their differences on immigration, border security and trade in cordial tones.
