Thesignificance of scientific achievements was the only award standard of The Shaw Prize, an international award for scientific achivements, said Chen-Ning Yang in Hong Kong Tuesday.

At the news conference, Yangadded the Prize honored individuals, regardless of race, nationality, gender and religious belief, who had achieved significant breakthrough in academic and scientific research or applications and whose work had resulted in a positive and profound impact on mankind.

Yang is the Nobel Prize winner in physics and the Chairman of the Board of Adjudicators of The Shaw Prize. The Shaw Prize Foundation announced six U.S. scientists shared all three annual prizes including Astronomy, Life Science and Medicine, and Mathematical Sciences, each bearing a monetary award of one million US dollars.

“Due to the extensity of the three prizes, members of the Selection Committees and the Board of Adjudicators are elites from different scientific fields, Yang said. “The selection is very strict.

The Shaw Prize is an annually international award established under the auspices of Mr. Run Run Shaw, the HK media mogul and charitarian, in 2002. Three Asians including two Chinese and one Japanese won the Prize before. This will be the 10th year that the Prize has been awarded and the presentation ceremony held in HK is scheduled for Sept.23, 2013.
