At least four toddlers were killed in southeastern Brazil on Thursday after a security guard at a day care center threw alcohol over the children and set them on fire, an official said.

The incident happened early Thursday morning at the Innocent Children's People Municipal Education Center, which cared for around 70 children in Janauba, Minas Gerias.

About 50 other children and their teachers were injured, including 15 victims in life-threatening conditions, according to local media.

The suspect has been identified as Damiao Soares dos Santos, 50, who had been working as night watchman for eight years at the center. He was hospitalized and died after setting himself on fire as well.

Brazilian President Michel Temer expressed his condolences, saying “I am deeply saddened by the tragedy with the kids in Janauba and I want to express my solidarity with the families.”

The motive of the attacker remains unclear.
