US elections: Small town of Dixville Notch keeps up tradition of being first to vote, Clinton wins with four votes

Thefirst resultfrom the US presidential election on Tuesday (Nov 8) is out. Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton has won in Dixville Notch, atiny town in New Hampshire with justeight votes.

The small mountain town just south of the Canadian border is well known for its longstanding tradition of being the first in the United States to vote. The voters cast their ballots at midnight on Tuesday.

CNN reported that MrsClinton won with four votes and her Republican rival Donald Trump took two votes.Libertarian Gary Johnson won one vote and there was one write-in for Mr Mitt Romney.

Polling in the rest of the country will open later in the day over six time zones.Results are expected to start trickling in from late morning to lunchtime on Wednesday.

Polls indicate a close race to the finish between Mrs Clinton and Mr Trump. Mrs Clinton leads by just 2.2 percentage points, according to a polling average by political website RealClearPolitics, and Bloomberg’s final poll released on Monday showed her ahead of Mr Trump - 44 per cent to 41 per cent among likely voters.
