Hyundai is pulling up its sleeves to promote green cars as it has agreed to work with regional governments to introduce hydrogen-electric taxis and launch a car-sharing initiative with hydrogen fuel-cell cars.
The automaker on Monday signed memorandums of understanding with the Ulsan and Gwangju city governments for the green-car projects.
The taxi program will begin in Ulsan in November with 10 Tucson ix hydrogen-electric cars, with five more to be added. Gwangju will launch the program with five cars next year.
When the next-generation hydrogen-electric cars come out in the first half of 2018, Hyundai plans to expand the program to other areas, with 20 vehicles in five different cities.
The car-sharing initiative will begin with 15 hydrogen-electric cars and 15 electric vehicles in Gwangju in November. The number of cars will be increased to 160 by 2018 and 300 by 2020, and the region will be expanded to the entire South Jeolla Province.
Hydrogen-electric cars take only three minutes to charge, and one charge can take the car over 400 km. But there are not many charging facilities yet and the building of relevant infrastructure has been slow.
