US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer on Friday formally initiated an investigation of alleged China's intellectual property practices under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.

"The investigation will seek to determine whether acts, policies, and practices of the Government of China related to technology transfer, intellectual property, and innovation are unreasonable or discriminatory and burden or restrict US commerce," the USTR's Office said in a statement.

It came days after President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive memorandum directing Lighthizer to decide whether to start the investigation.
