French exhibition in Beijing promotes cultural exchanges

The exhibition From Courbet, Corot to Impressionism — The World of Light and Shadow from Normandy, France was launched at the Beijing World Art Museum in Beijing on July 17, as part of the Fifteenth Festival Croisements.

Open to the public until Oct. 15, the exhibition showcases 61 French masterpieces inspired by the Normandy region. It includes works by key figures in the impressionist movement such as Claude Monet and Berthe Morisot; the leader of the Realist movement, Gustave Courbet; and painter Camille Corot of the French Barbizon school.

In the opening ceremony, Laurent Bili, the French ambassador to China, expressed his recognition of the achievements made in cultural exchanges between China and France and praised the artistic value of the exhibits.

As the closing exhibition of the Festival Croisements 2021 in Beijing, this exhibition brought together over 60 works by French artists. We will follow the footsteps of French art masters including Delacroix, Courbet, Corot, Bert, Moriso, and Manet, to travel through time and space in Normandy region, he said.

Ji Pengcheng, executive curator of the Beijing World Art Museum of China Millennium Monument, introduced the unique position of Normandy region in art history. He said that the exhibition features masterpieces from before and after the impressionism movement. He said it represented an excellent opportunity for the public to gain an insight into the impressionism art movement.

This exhibition was organized by the China Millennium Monument, and co-sponsored by Beijing Wenze Times company, the School of New Media Art and Design of Beihang University, and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. It is supported by the French Embassy in China.

The Fifteenth Festival Croisements is being staged from April 21 to July 31 this year in 14 cities across China. The festival includes a total of 78 China-France cultural events covering visual art, music, theater, film, dance, fashion and literature.
