Albania has obtained the candidate status of the European Union (EU) and therefore fight against corruption is a national priority, Prosecutor General Adriatik Llalla said Tuesday.

Apart from court cases, a high number of senior officials suspected of corruption and dereliction of duty were under investigation, said Llalla at a conference titled "On Corruption and Society" held in Romania's Bucharest.

Albania has made big steps forward in the system of justice 25 years after the fall of the Berlin wall and the establishment of a democratic system in Albania, he said.

After reviewing the efforts to reinforce the rule of law in Albania since the 1990s, Llalla pointed out two current priorities for his office: fight against corruption and organized crime.

Llalla also appreciated inter-institutional cooperation in the fight against corruption.
