A student suspect was taken into custody on Monday after a potentially explosive device was found on a high school campus in the U.S. state of Texas, local media reported.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released, is only known as a student and was arrested hours after a backpack suspected of containing explosive devices was found at the Seven Lakes High School in Katy in southeast Texas on Monday, local media KHOU reported.

Earlier, school officials reported a suspicious-looking backpack on the east campus of the school. School officials believed the backpack was a "potential threat" and decided to evacuate the campus.

All of the some 3,000 students were then escorted safely outside the school and led to an enclosed area on a football and baseball field while officers swept the campus, according to the report. A bomb squad from Houston Police Department, the FBI and the local Sheriff's Office were on the scene.

Police have cordoned off nearby roads to ensure safety. Students were dismissed on Monday afternoon. It's not immediately known when the school will resume classes.
