COLOMBO, Dec 19 (APD) - A prominent Sri Lankan legislator and former Minister was arrested and remanded over a road accident, the Police said on Thursday.

Former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka was arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) on Wednesday night and remanded till 24th December after being produced in court on Thursday.

He was arrested on the advice of the Attorney General related to a road accident that occurred in 2016.

A court order had been issued earlier preventing the overseas travel of Ranawaka over the accident in 2016.

The travel ban had also been imposed on his driver over the motor accident.

The Police are investigating the accident in which one youth was seriously injured.

However, the former Minister insisted that he was not directly involved in the accident and accused the government of engaging in a witch hunt.

The Government, however, denied claims that it has launched a political witch hunt on members of the opposition.

Cabinet spokesman, Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that the current administration has no intention of following the line taken by the former Government accusing them of taking revenge on the then opposition.

Gunawardena insisted that the due process was followed when former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka was arrested.

He said that the arrest was made on the advice of the Attorney General and the Deputy Speaker was also informed as it involved a Parliamentarian.
