Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is rethinking his approach to philanthropy in hopes of better assisting people who need help right now. Earlier this afternoon, Bezos asked Twitter users for suggestions on where his money and efforts would be best directed. “This tweet is a request for ideas,” Bezos said, explaining that he wants his philanthropic work to be less focused on the long term and more “at the intersection of urgent need and lasting impact.”

The businesses led by Bezos (Amazon.com, Blue Origin) and the newspaper he owns (The Washington Post) each have long-term missions that he claims “are contributing to society and civilization in their own way.”

But it sounds as though Bezos wants his philanthropy endeavors to be “the opposite” of that and much more immediate. He’s also open to hearing arguments against the short-term strategy.

And so one of tech’s most successful executives — with a net worth of over $80 billion — is turning to the internet to brainstorm exactly where some of that money could matter most.

Bezos is typically quieter than other industry CEOs with his giving; the Bezos Family Foundation focuses its efforts on education, while Jeff and wife MacKenzie Bezos have donated tens of millions of dollars to scientific research and other causes. But now’s your chance to sound off about what he should do next. Take advantage, Twitter users.
