Popular Chinese actress Tang Wei fell victim to telecom fraud on Saturday in Shanghai, according to local police.

Tang was shooting in a movie and television base in the eastern China city when she answered a call in the afternoon. She was persuaded to go to a local bank and wire 210,000 yuan (34,699 U.S. dollars) to a fraud suspect.

Police in the city's Songjiang District received a report from Tang at 4 p.m. and filed the case.

Internet users posted messages and photos on China's Twitter-like Sina Weibo, claiming to have seen Tang in a bank.

An investigation into the case is under way.

Tang shot to fame in Oscar-winning director Ang Lee's 2007 spy thriller "Lust, Caution."
