Three, two, one…blast off! Today in Paris, Karl Lagerfeld outfitted the Grand Palais with a rocket for his
Fall 2017 Chanel show
, complete with a mock launch. For a man who’s been everywhere from Cuba to Dubai, where else is there to go but up? On the runway, there were literal astronaut prints and planet-shaped minaudières, but Lagerfeld also sent out subtler nods to the great era of space exploration, in the form of mod ’60s shift dresses and cap-toe go-go boots. We’re Ready for Liftoff
Chanel has turned the Grand Palais into many things, from a functioning brasserie to an iceberg-filled room, but never before have we witnessed a rocket launch. Chanel’s double C–branded spacecraft was the centerpiece of the show and was surrounded by a raised silver runway and stadium seating. After the last model walked, a group gathered at the base of the rocket and it had a mock liftoff. Next stop, Trappist-1!

These Boots Are Made for Walking…On the Moon
Knee-high, cap-toe boots were the Chanel shoe of the season. The style came in a variety of colors, none likely to be as popular as the ones in silver glitter.

It’s Cold in Space
The side effect of space travel—aside from the lack of gravity—is the chilling temperature. Lagerfeld’s solution for this includes metallic Mylar space blankets and a hefty serving of nubby Chanel tweeds cut into suits, shirts, trousers, and dresses, and worn with sparkle tights. Most looks were also accompanied by a knit wraparound headband to keep models’ ears warm—and highlight their dramatic, gravity-defying hair.

Galaxy Prints Take Center Stage
Astronomical prints have been appearing on runways all season long. At Chanel, there were literal astronaut prints as well as artistic takes on planets and galaxies.

Rocket Men Take the Runway
More men than ever walked in Chanel’s show today, including perennial favorites Brad Kroenig, Baptiste Giabiconi, Lucky Blue Smith, and Ash Stymest (the paramour of Lagerfeld’s muse, Lily-Rose Depp). The predominant look for guys was a cream-colored jacket or knit with white trousers and silver accessories.

Couture-Inspired Gowns Close the Show
The spirit of the beaded, bejeweled, and feathered dresses that closed Chanel’s Spring 2017 couture show lived on in today’s ready-to-wear with a series of jet black gowns with bead and feather trim.
