French police arrested the presumed gunman who targeted the country's media outlets and seriously injured a photographer at the Liberation newspaper, Interior Minister Manuel Valls said on Thursday.

The Paris shooter has been named as Abdelhakim Dekhar and identified as a lone gunman who also opened fire at the headquarters of a major French bank west of Paris.

"All evidence showed his involvement in the facts alleged against him," the minister was quoted as saying by local media.

"His arrest is a relief. There was a lot of concern over the shooter," he added.

Dekhar was arrested late on Wednesday in an underground parking lot in northwestern Paris suburb of Bois-Colombes. He was semi-conscious and attempting to commit suicide, according to Valls.

"Investigators have not yet questioned him. We hope to discover his motives," the minister said.

The 48-year-old gunman was in custody on charges of attempted murder and kidnapping and illegal confinement, Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said on Thursday.

Molins said he had not been questioned yet due to his health situation.

The suspect was sentenced for four-year jail term in 1998 for his involvement in a shootout with police that killed five people, including three officers.
