Oily stains were discovered at Kyoto 's 1,200-year-old Kiyomizu Buddhist temple on Monday, another of a series of vandalism acts that happened recently in Japan, local media reported.

According to the police, oily stains were found at three spots of Kiyomizu temple on Monday morning, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Kyoto which U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama visited about a month ago.

Since late March, at least 34 cultural heritage sites in nine prefectures of Japan have been found vandalized by oily substance, including UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Toji in Nara, and Nijo Castle in Kyoto.

Security has been tightened at temples and shrines across Japan. The police have been making investigations on the incidents under the Law for Protection of Cultural Properties and other related legislation but no progress has been announced yet.
