BUDAPEST, Sept. 25 (APD) - Hungary planned to phase out coal-fired electricity generation by 2030, aiming at reducing emissions and tackle climate change.

Hungary President János Áder said on Tuesday that the nation will increase its solar power capacity ten times by 2030.

“We will stop producing energy from coal while expanding production of nuclear power plants. Thanks to the combined effect of these three measures, 90 percent of Hungary’s electricity production will be carbon-free by 2030 and not by 2050,” he said.

Hungary has reduced its carbon dioxide emissions by 32 percent since 1990, with per capita emissions among the lowest in the industrialized countries.

In tackling carbon emission and climate change issues the nation also plans to improve energy efficiency from buildings by at least 30 percent by 2050, President Áder said, adding that by 2030 Hungary will use only electric buses in its cities.

Since the Paris Agreement of 2015, emissions worldwide have increased by 2.1 percent.
