The European Union and Papua New Guinea (PNG) have signed a development partnership program worth 208 million U.S. dollars, the Pacific News Agency Service (PACNEWS) reported Thursday.

Signed by European Commissioner for International Development Neven Mimica and PNG's National Planning Minister Charles Abel in Suva earlier this week, the National Indicative Program, funded under the 11th European Development Fund, will guide EU development cooperation with PNG until 2020.

"I'm pleased to note that our support will concentrate on three strategically important sectors of the sustainably and inclusive development of PNG, namely rural entrepreneurship, water sanitation hygiene and education in the form of technical and vocational education and training," said Mimica.

"This is fully in line with EU agenda for change which aims to concentrate resources on sectors where EU assistance can contribute tangibly to poverty reduction and inclusive growth," he added.

In response, Abel thanked the EU for its support, saying the funding is responding very well to PNG's development plan and " will focus on areas we work together and identify areas of strength."
