The United States marked its Independence Day on Saturday, July 4.

Many celebrations have been toned down or cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic in most states.

But in Washington, D.C, the holiday was observed throughout the city.

U.S. President Donald Trump hosted the holiday with a "Salute to America" event at the White House.

The event included the U.S. ArmyGolden KnightsParachute Team, and flyovers by military aircrafts.

President Trumpcalled for unity and condemned protesters for the removal of historicalmonuments in his Independence Day speech.

Meanwhile, people protested against racism and police brutality as they gathered outside the White house.

And yet, the "Salute to America" event was held without any COVID-19 protection measures.

Masks and social-distancing were not required for attendees, even though daily COVID-19 infection numbers keep breaking records in some states across the nation.

Texas and Florida hit a record of daily COVID-19 cases on Saturday, with 11,445 and 8,258 new cases.
