Myanmar peace negotiators resume talks after week-long recess

The peace negotiators of Myanmar government and ethnic armed groups are striving for the finalization of the draft nationwide ceasefire agreement being discussed during the resumed peace talks here on Monday.

The seventh day of the seventh round of peace talks was resumed after a week-long recess.

If both sides agree on four remaining points left unresolved in their sixth-day talks on March 22, the ceasefire agreement will be concluded successfully, said U Aung Min, vice chairman of Union Peace-Making Work Committee (UPWC).

U Naing Han Tha, leader of the ethnic armed groups' Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team (NCCT), believed that there will be a success if both sides strive for achieving peace, stability and development of the country.

The seventh round of peace talks in Yangon commenced on March 17 in a bid to finalize the draft and push for signing.

Meanwhile, amid the Yangon peace talks, heavy fighting between the government forces and the Kokang ethnic army continued in Kokang region almost on a daily basis over the last two weeks and clashes in Kachin state also continued.
