Members of European Parliament (MEPs) on Thursday approved the setting up of a special committee on counter-terrorism, according to a press release from the European Parliament.

The special committee will address the practical and legislative deficiencies in the fight against terrorism across the European Union (EU).

It will not only look at the exchange of information between member states, but also assess the work of the EU agencies and bodies active in this area with a view to a more unified approach.

Thirty MEPs will sit on the special committee and its mandate will run for 12 months, which can be prolonged, the press release said.

The decision was adopted by 527 votes in favor to 73 against, with 36 abstentions.
