More than 2,400 athletes from 45 countries and regions of Asia are participating in 16 major events at the Nanjing Games.

President of the Olympic Council of Asia, Sheikh Ahmad, has spoken with CNC correspondents about the games.

SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) SHEIKH AHMAD, President, Olympic Council of Asia:

"We have achieved our goals on two fronts. First, we had wanted to provide a good games and good environment for our youth in Asia and of course for the interactional youths in the future. To prepare them so they are ready to be the next champions and leaders and role models of the future. And secondly, we wanted to keep the operational cost down, which was a target of the IOC and President Jacques Rogge. We have been very successful in carrying that out. Providing a Games that balance the operational cost with the size and importance of the Games. So far, there have been a lot of signs that these Games may be one of the best ever.

The president noted the efforts made by the organizers in curbing the budget on infrastructure, arena construction and the opening ceremony.

He also hailed the 15,000 volunteers for their dedication to the Games.

SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) SHEIKH AHMAD, President, Olympic Council of Asia:

"(After holding) other major games, I think the Chinese citizens understand how to welcome foreigners. That is a real necessity for the Olympics. But the most attractive thing in Nanjing is the number of volunteers. Despite there being a relatively small Games with 16 sports, there are 15,000 volunteers. And they perform like clockwork. Everybody works by the book. Everybody wants success for the Games. That is a rare quality."

This is also a sports event featuring cultural exchanges.

At the Athletes Village, organizers set up 16 culture booths, for young athletes to try exotic games and interactive activities.

SOUNDBITE (CHINESE) HU JINQIU, Chinese basketball player:

"It's very interesting. Each country and region is presenting its unique culture. I'm excited to see it with my own eyes."

The Asian youth games will run through this Saturday.
