Indian army on Sunday claimed it has recovered a major cache of arms and ammunition, including 20 assault rifles and pistols, near line-of- control (LoC) in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

The recovery, according to army, was made during a search operation at Furkian Gali area of frontier Kupwara district, about 175 km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian- controlled Kashmir.

"Our troops have recovered a major haul of weapons, which also include 20 assault rifles (AK-47 rifles) and 20 pistols," said Lt. Col N N Joshi, the Srinagar based Indian army spokesman.

"The arms and ammunition was hidden underneath ground between LoC and anti- infiltration obstacle system (AIOS)."

According to Joshi, search operation in the area was carried out on intelligence inputs about militants dumping arms in the area.

Following the recovery of arms, the troops along LoC have been put on high alert.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. The gunfight between militants and Indian troops takes place intermittently.
