APD | Budget airline cuts trips to China; reduces flights to Hong Kong and Macau

MANILA, Feb. 1 (APD) – With more people getting sick with the feared and rapid spread of coronavirus, Cebu Pacific said they will cancel their all flights between the Philippines and mainland China (Beijing, Shanghai, Xiamen, Guangzhou and Shenzen) effective tomorrow, February 2 until Sunday, March 29, 2020.

Flights between the Philippines, Hong Kong and Macau, have been reduced.

In a statement released today, Cebu Pacific said passengers affected by flight cancellations have been told or notified through their contact details provided during booking. The affected passengers can either rebook their flights within 30 days from the original travel date, refund the tickets in full and store the value of the ticket in a travel fund for future use.

Industry sources said the impact of the 2019-nCOV, about P 3 billion in profit may be lost due to the crisis.

Earlier, Philippine Air Lines said they already reduced flights between Manila and Greater China by over 50% effective today.

“There is a need to maintain a number of our flights on the various Manila-China routs, so that we can serve the urgent travel needs of our passengers, including many Chinese nationals returning to the mainland following their Lunar New Year holidays and Filipinos who are turning home from their stays in China,” the country’s oldest airline said in a statement uploaded in their official website today.

The routes affected are Manila-Hong Kong-Manila, Manila-Beijing-Manila, Manila-Macau-Manila, Manila-Guangzhou-Manila, Manila-Xiamen-Manila, Manila-Jinjiang-Manila and Manila-Shanghai (Pudong)-Manila.

The reduction in flights will be felt until April 1, 2020.

However, the PAL Management said they expect to further reduce their China flights based on their daily assessment of the situation and in adhering to guidelines and instruction from the country’s Department of Health and its Bureau of Quarantine as well as other concerned government authorities. Rebooking and rerouting will be allowed for travel until June 30, 2020. They also waived penalties but fare difference and applicable taxes will apply. Refunding the cost of tickets will be allowed sans the usual penalties.
