top 1 | Thailand's ousted PM Yingluck has fled abroad: sources

Ousted Thai prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra has fled the country ahead of a verdict against her in a negligence trial brought by the junta that overthrew her, sources close to the Shinawatra family said on Friday.

Yingluck, 50, whose family has dominated Thai politics for more than 15 years, failed to show up at court for judgment in a case centered on the multi-billion dollar losses incurred by a rice subsidy scheme for farmers.

Overthrown in 2014, Yingluck had faced up to 10 years in prison if found guilty.

Mr Robb has tried to rebrand the Klan as a gentler, more tempered group - one that's driven by Christian values and is family focused.


top 3 | 10 missing, 5 injured after US destroyer collision off Singapore

A rescue operation is under way for 10 sailors missing after a US destroyer collided with a tanker east of Singapore on Monday, in the second accident involving an American warship in two months.

Guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain collided with the merchant vessel Alnic MC east of Singapore and near the Straits of Malacca in the early hours, the US Navy said a statement.

One week after violent protests rattled Charlottesville, Virginia, a scheduled free speech rally in Boston today was met with thousands of counterprotesters, but the day went off mostly smoothly, police said, with 33 arrests but few injuries.

The free speech rally was deemed "officially over" by police ahead of its official end time, but thousands of counterprotesters continued to spread out in the city throughout the afternoon, with some protesting peacefully but others confronting officers and people.


top 5 | Trump announces plan to increase U.S. presence in Afghanistan

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday night his administration’s plans to continue the engagement of the United States military in Afghanistan, a strategy meant to combat the influence of the Taliban and the ISIS affiliate in the country that will forgo a formal timetable and instead rely upon "conditions on the ground" to guide U.S. activities.

"We must acknowledge the reality I'm here to talk about tonight, that nearly 16 years after the September 11 attacks, after the extraordinary sacrifice of blood and treasure, the American people are weary of war without victory," said Trump in an address from Virginia’s Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall.


top 6 | USS John McCain: Remains of US sailors found

Bodies of some of the 10 missing sailors have been found in flooded compartments of the USS John S. McCain, a Navy destroyer that collided with a commercial vessel east of Singapore early Monday morning, the U.S. Navy said.

Ten sailors have been missing since the collision, and the remains of some were found by divers performing recovery operations inside the ship, Adm. Scott Swift, the commander of U.S. Pacific Fleet, said in a statement.

Remains that may belong to another sailor missing from the McCain were found by the Royal Malaysian Navy as it assisted the U.S. in waters east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, Swift said.


top 7 | U.S. President Trump's chief strategist Steve Bannon leaves post

President Trump's chief strategist Steve Bannon is leaving his White House post.

Mr Bannon was a key adviser to the property tycoon during last year's election campaign and has been a contentious presence in the White House. The former leader of conservative news website Breitbart News has pressed Mr Trump to follow through with his campaign promises.

But he has also clashed with some of the US President's closest advisers, including son-in-law Jared Kushner.


top 8 | Europe to stay vigilance in fight against terrorism

On Thursday afternoon, a van mowed down people at the famous street Las Ramblas in Barcelona, Spain.

Hours later, a vehicle ran over several people in the Catalan resort town of Cambrils, about 100 kilometers southwest of Barcelona. The five alleged terrorists were taken down by Catalan police in a shootout.

The number of people killed in Thursday's double terror attacks rose to 15, the Catalan emergency services confirmed. The fact that terrorism is rampant in Europe is a result of a series of internal and external reasons. Experts believe that European countries must stay alert in the fight against terrorism.


top 9 | Russian jets kill 200+ Islamic State militants near Syria's Deir al-Zor

The Russian air force has destroyed a large column of Islamic State militants, vehicles and large caliber weapons heading to the Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor, the Russian defense ministry has said.

"The Russian Air Force destroyed another large column of ISIS fighters that was heading to the area of the city of Deir ez-Zor, where international terrorists are trying to regroup and equip their last base in Syria," the statement says.

The ministry further noted that "more than 200 militants" have been killed in the strikes, which also destroyed "heavy vehicles with ammunition."


top 10 | At least 23 dead, dozens hurt as train derails in India

At least 23 people were killed and dozens injured after an express train derailed in north India Saturday, officials said, as rescuers clambered across mangled carriages to pull passengers from the wreckage.

Emergency workers and crowds of local people rushed to the site where 14 coaches derailed near Muzaffarnagar district in Uttar Pradesh state, some 130 kilometres (80 miles) from New Delhi, the latest deadly disaster on the country's creaking rail network.
