Update | 50 confirmed dead in US Bangla passenger plane crash

KATHMANDU, March 12 (APD) – At least 50 people have died when a passenger plane of the US-Bangla Airlines crashed at Nepal's Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) Monday afternoon, police have confirmed.

Seventeen passengers have been injured in the crash. They have been rushed to nearby Kathmandu Medical College (KMC), Sinamangal for treatment. According to Prem Nath Thakur, spokesperson of the TIA, the aircraft belonging to US-Bangla crashed inside TIA premises while landing. Police and firefighters are engaged in rescue operations. “We are collecting details,” he added.

KMC sources said the names of severely burnt two Chinese nationals, who have been brought to the hospital, are yet to be identified.

Likewise, Nepal’s Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli reached TIA to acquire first-hand information about the incident. Sources said PM Oli instructed the concerned officials to expedite the rescue operations.

The Bombardier Dash Q-400 aircraft, with 67 passengers and four crew members onboard, crashed while landing. The TIA has been closed following the incident.

The details of the incident are yet to be ascertained. The US-Bangla Airlines is a privately-owned Bangladeshi airline headquartered in Dhaka.

This is a major air crash at the TIA airport after a Turkish Airlines flight crash-landed in March 2015.

Likewise, TIA officials informed that the black box of the crashed aircraft has been recovered.

Update | TIA back in operation

The Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) , which was shut down for almost three hours following the crash of US-Bangla airplane, has resumed operation.

TIA was shut down after the Dash 8 Q400 plane coming from Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh, to Kathmandu crashed while landing at the country’s only international airport at 2:18 pm.
