The governor of Ghazni province, Musa Khan Akbarzada, confirmed Thursday that parliamentarian Freeba Kakar of Kandahar province has been kidnapped by Taliban militants and is in the outfit's custody.

"Taliban militants kidnapped Freeba Kakar from Kandahar-Kabul highway while (she was) passing Ghazni on Sunday and efforts are underway to secure her release," Akbarzada told Xinhua.

A female member of Wolesi Jirga, or Lower House of Afghan parliament, Kakar along with some members of her family was on way to Kabul when Taliban militants intercepted her car in Ghazni and took her away to unknown locations, Akbarzada said, adding her two daughters and a son had been freed through negotiations mediated by local elders.

Meantime, a local official in Ghazni province on the condition of anonymity said that the Taliban outfit has conditioned the release of the lawmaker to the release of four Taliban commanders from government prison.

Neither the Taliban outfit nor the government has made comment.
