Kenya reports 437 new COVID-19 cases, total tally jumps to 43,580

Kenya on Friday reported 437 new COVID-19 cases, pushing its total tally up to 43,580.

The East African nation continues to see an upward spike in daily new cases, having further eased COVID-19 restrictions in September.

Kenya is one of only nine African countries that have registered more than 40,000 cases.

In its latest briefing, Kenya's health ministry also announced eight new COVID-19 deaths, raising its total fatality figure to 813.

Kenya reported its first virus case on March 13, before seeing a gradual rise in its caseload over the following two months.

As August wound down however, the country started seeing a decline in new cases, a decision thought to have influenced the government's decision to ease some restrictions.

As its daily new cases now rise again, the government has threatened to tighten measures to ensure the country avoids a second wave of infections.

In better news, the Ministry of Health reported 140 new recoveries, taking the country's total number of successful recoveries to 31,648.
