A woman was undergoing emergency treatment in hospital in Liverpool Thursday after she was shot and wounded by armed cops.

In a statement, Merseyside Police confirmed they were dealing with an incident in the city Thursday afternoon after receiving reports that a woman was in the street brandishing a knife.

A police spokesperson said: "Patrols attended the scene and a female was shot by police and suffered an injury to her upper body. The woman has been taken to hospital for treatment. An investigation is underway and the area is currently cordoned off."

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said it has begun an independent investigation on the police shooting.

The Liverpool Echo reported police officers administered first aid to the woman before paramedics arrived to take her to hospital by ambulance.

The newspaper reported: "She was handcuffed while they gave her first aid and they were shouting for people to get back and turn their phones off."

One eyewitness told reporters the woman was seen brandishing a knife and making threats before police arrived.

He said: "I could see her in the street with the knife and she was shouting threats at people."

On June 20, three people were killed and three more were seriously injured in a stabbing at Forbury Gardens in Reading, England. A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder after being detained at the scene.
