Denmark to send 16 more soldiers to Afghanistan

Denmark will send 16 more military personnel to Afghanistan to strengthen its contribution to the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission, the government has announced.

The new personnel, to be stationed near the Afghan capital city of Kabul, will still focus on advice, support and training of the country's security forces, the Danish Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

Denmark will also maintain its annual financial support to the Afghan forces of 100 million Danish kroner (15.3 million U.S. dollars) as part of its wider support to the Asian country, it said.

"It is necessary that we and the international community continue to support Afghanistan so that the country can recover and fight the terrorists," said Danish Foreign Minister Kristian Jensen.

Denmark has maintained military presence in Afghanistan since the end of the U.S.-led Afghan War in 2002. It has around 80 military personnel operating in the country.
