Nine arrested in London protests against more police powers

Nine protesters were arrested in London on Saturday as they marched to demand that the government rescind a plan to introduce legislation that would increase police powers.

According to Reuters, more than 1,000 people marched through central London chanting "kill the bill" outside government buildings.

A police statement said nine people had been arrested and officers were "continuing to engage" with protesters who had gathered in a park in south London after the march.

Other cities across England and Wales also witnessed similar protests.

The new legislation would give police powers to block non-violent protests which have a "significant disruptive effect" on the public or parliament.

Critics of the legislation argue that it will limit their right to protest.
