The Secretary for Food and Health Dr Ko Wing-man on Thursday expressed his profound sadness at the passing way of Professor Lee Shiu-hung, former Director of Health and Emeritus Professor of Community Medicine of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and extended deep condolences to his family.

Lee, who retired from the department in 1994 after serving the government for 34 years, reportedly died of cerebral haemorrhage in the early hours on Thursday.

"Professor Lee served in the medical and public health sector for more than 50 years. His outstanding contribution to advancing Hong Kong's medical and public health framework is highly remarkable.

"He was an expert in public health and made wholehearted commitment to the development and training of public health echelons as well as the prevention of infectious diseases. He was also zealous in enhancing the promotion of health in the community," Ko said.

"The death of Professor Lee is a great loss to the medical and public health sector. We will make every effort to help the family of Professor Lee during this sad period," Ko added.

After retiring from the government, Lee joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1994 as professor and chairman of the Department of Community and Family Medicine, and later served as Director of the School of Public Health from 1999 to 2001.

He was also the founding President of the Hong Kong Society of Infectious Diseases and the Hong Kong Epidemiological Association.
