The Philippine military has been dropping bombs on the southern city of Marawi, parts of which are occupied by Islamic militants. Authorities say they have made gains in the battle, but still have not completely retaken the entire city.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial law on the whole island, aiming to wrest momentum from the cluster of groups that have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.

Despite the safety of many residents, many are still stuck in the conflict between government forces and the Maute group that has desolated Marawi City. CGTN's Martin Lowe was with the soldiers and members of the police force closing in on the insurgents.
