Portugal's President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa on Wednesday announced that he had entered self-isolation after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19.

In a statement on his official website, de Sousa said the contact was with a member of Casa Civil, a body of specialists who provide consultation services to the president.

The statement added that the 72-year-old was waiting for the country's health authorities to determine the risk level of the exposure and the length of his isolation.

By Wednesday, Portugal had reported 446,606 COVID-19 infections and 7,377 deaths, according to data from the Johns Hopkins University.
