Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met his South Korean counterpart Kang Kyung-wha for talks in Seoul on Thursday.

CGTN correspondent Shane Hahm said the exact details of the meeting has not disclosed yet, but prior to the meeting, Wang told reporters that his visit shows that Beijing highly values its relationship with Seoul.

Wang is visiting the neighboring country as it battles the third wave of COVID-19 infections.

Citing the country's Disease Control and Prevention Agency, Yonhap reported that the daily number of coronavirus cases in South Korea surpassed 500 for the first time in over eight months on Thursday.

The country now has a total caseload of 32,318.

Wang said his visit amid a global pandemic shows how much importance Beijing places on its relationship with South Korea. He also said the two countries are working together, contributing to regional peace and stability, and promoting the regional economy.

Later, Wang will pay a visit to the presidential office to meet with President Moon Jae-in.

He will also meet with other senior officials and political advisors during his three-day visit before departing on Friday afternoon.
