Russia has reported 4,774 COVID-19 cases over the last 24 hours, raising the total number to 62,773 as of Thursday, the country's coronavirus response center said in a statement.

The daily increase continued to slow for the third consecutive day after weeks of mandatory self-isolation, the center's data showed.

The death toll now stands at 555, up 42 from the previous day, while 4,891 people have recovered, including 471 in the past 24 hours, the statement said.

Moscow, the country's worst-hit area, confirmed 1,959 new cases over the last 24 hours, taking its total to 33,940.

Russia's consumer rights and human well-being watchdog said in a statement Thursday that 151,737 people were under medical observation as of Wednesday.

The country announced its first two cases on Jan. 31, with confirmed cases increasing significantly since the end of March. The daily tally reached its peak of 6,060 on April 19.

All Russians, except those working for essential institutions and establishments, are on paid leave from March 30 till April 30 as part of the country's efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

The whole Moscow region toughened from Wednesday movement restrictions to ensure the quarantine.

Now residents wishing to leave home and use public transport have to peg a personal electronic ticket to the QR code issued to them as a pass.

Private car owners have to peg their plate to the QR code-based pass or face a heavy fine.

Muscovites can still go out without requesting a pass to visit the nearest supermarkets or pharmacies, or walk their pets at a distance no longer than 100 meters from home.

On Wednesday, the Russian Communications Ministry said in a statement that the QR code-based passes will be expanded to another 21 of the country's 85 regions.
