WHO: Death toll rises from Yemen cholera epidemic

The World Health Organization has said a cholera outbreak in war-torn Yemen has killed about 1,500 people since late April.

At a press conference in the capital city of Sanaa, officials said there may be nearly a quarter of a million cases, and only two of the country's provinces are free of the epidemic.

Meanwhile, officials from the United Nations Children's Fund said one in four of the dead are children, and warned that the number of cases had increased on average by about 5,000 per day since the end of April.

War, famine and a lack of proper medical facilities have added to the crisis. Cholera causes severe vomiting and diarrhea, and often results in death.
