A small passenger plane crashed when it was trying to land in Papua, easternmost of Indonesia, on Wednesday, killing one person and badly wounding pilot and 4 others, a rescue official said here.

The plane typed Cessna and operated by Indonesian firm, Komala Air, had a hard landing and skidded off runway at 08:43 a.m. local time in Ninia airport of Yakohimo district, official in charge at the national search and rescue office named only Dimas said.

"The plane is badly damaged. One technician was killed, the pilot and four others people on board got serious injuries, including broken bones," he told Xinhua by phone.

Rescuers from local search and rescue office helped evacuation, said Dimas.

The wounded persons have been rushed to a nearby hospital, he said.

The plane was on route from of Wamena to Ninia, said Dimas.

Small plane has been commonly used in Indonesia's remote Papua as transport means, but the geographical condition and poor weather have often caused accidents.
