Fox's comedy "The Other Woman " unseated three-time box office champion "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" to win the race at North American theaters this weekend.

"The Other Woman" collected 24.7 million U.S. dollars in ticket sales from 3,205 locations, according to estimates by box-office tracker Rentrak on Sunday. The female-centered comedy about marital infidelity starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton overcame largely negative reviews to far surpass industry expectations of an opening weekend.

The film attracted lots of females that made up 75 percent of the audience, though it earned only a 25 percent approval rating from reviewers at Rotten Tomatoes.

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" added another 16 million dollars to its coffers from 3,620 locations in its fourth weekend, according to Rentrak estimates. Starring Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson, the latest superhero sequel from Disney has taken in 224.9 million dollars since its release on April 4, becoming the top-grossing April release of all time in North America.

Sony's religious-themed film "Heaven Is For Real" held the third place with 13.8 million dollars, followed by Fox's animated sequel "Rio 2" with 13.7 million dollars.

Another film premiering this week, "Brick Mansions," Paul Walker's last completed film before his death last November, brought in 9.6 million dollars.

Rounding out the 10 most popular films in North America this weekend, as estimated by studios, were "Transcendence" (4.1 million dollars), "The Quiet Ones" (4 million), "Bears" (3.6 million), "Divergent" (3.6 million) and "Haunted House 2" (3.3 million).
