Gansu earthquake dozens killed, nearly 400 wounded

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake has jolted China's northwest province of Gansu, killing at least dozens of people.

The tremor jolted a juncture area of two counties on Monday morning, causing massive damages.

The massive quake occurred just before 8 am on Monday at the junction of Minxian and Zhangxian counties.

The epicenter was at a depth of 20 km.

By Monday evening, 75 people were confirmed dead and nearly 600 others injured.

Communication was cut off in 13 towns of Zhangxian County.

And sources with the Minxian County government said most of its townships have been affected.

The townships of Meichuan and Puma were seriously hit.

The quake lasted for about one minute, causing many buildings to collapse.

Locals in Minxian County said they felt strong tremor and saw noticeable shake of trees and homes.

Meanwhile, the earthquake was also felt in neighboring cities of Dingxi, Longnan, Tianshui, as well as the provincial capital of Lanzhou.

The cities of Xi'an, Baoji and Xianyang in neighboring Shaanxi Province were also reported to have felt the quake.

As of Monday afternoon, more than 370 aftershocks had been recorded in the quake-hit region, with the strongest measuring 5.6 magnitude.

More than 1,200 homes had been destroyed while 21,000 homes have been seriously damaged.
