Smartphonesarenowfirmlyapartofeverydaylifeformany,andthatmakesthemjuicytargetsforpeoplelookingfordigitalsoftspots,CraigFederighi,Apple'sseniorvicepresidentofsoftwareengineering,wroteinanopinioncolumnfortheWashingtonPostpublishedonSundayevening.That'swhyApplefocusesonsecurity,includingtheencryptionbuiltintotheiPhone,hesays.
"Doinganythingtohamperthatmissionwouldbeaseriousmistake,"Federighiwrote."That'swhyit'ssodisappointingthattheFBI,JusticeDepartmentandothersinlawenforcementarepressingustoturnbacktheclocktoaless-securetimeandless-securetechnologies."
TheFBIwantsAppletobuildanewpieceofsoftwarethatwouldthenbeloadedontoaniPhone5CusedbySyedFarook,oneoftheshootersintheSanBernardinomassacrethatleft14peopledeadlastDecember.Apple,aswellasdigitalrightsgroupsandsecurityexperts,havearguedthatsuchatoolwouldalmostcertainlygetloose,andendangerotherusersofAppledevices.
"Oncecreated,thissoftware—whichlawenforcementhasconcededitwantstoapplytomanyiPhones—wouldbecomeaweaknessthathackersandcriminalscouldusetowreakhavocontheprivacyandpersonalsafetyofusall,"Federighiwrote.
