Five armed militants were killed and 13 others arrested during a joint special operation in the eastern Afghan province of Ghazni, the Interior Ministry said on Monday.

"On Sunday night, General Command of Police Special Units launched a joint special operation with (NATO-led) Resolute Support Mission Forces in Spina Ghondi and Tanki villages, Nawa district, Ghazni province," the ministry said in a statement, adding the joint forces also found and seized ammunition after the raid.

Two members of Afghan police Special Forces were also wounded during the clashes in the raid, the statement noted.

The Afghan forces have beefed up security operations against militants as the war-weary country is facing upsurges in attacks by Taliban insurgents and Islamic State (IS) militants across the country.

But the militants responded by armed attacks and bombings.

Scores of security forces and civilians were killed and wounded in a series of attacks by Taliban and IS fighters over the past two weeks.
