Tanzania will hold its general elections on 28 October, the country's electoral body announced.

The National Electoral Commission (NEC) said it would approve the presidential and parliamentary candidates on 25 August, two months before the vote.

In the statement signed by NEC chairman Semistocles Kaijage, campaigns will start on 26 August and end on 27 October, a day before the election.

President John Magufuli was earlier this month nominated to carry the ruling CCM party's flag in the presidential poll, a show of confidence bestowed upon him by the party.

The party also picked Hussein Mwinyi, the son of former Tanzanian president Ali Hassan Mwinyi, to run for president of the semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar.

Former Tanzanian Member of Parliament Tundu Lissu has expressed interest in running for the top seat against Magufuli.

According to the NEC, about 29 million Tanzanians have registered to vote in this year's election.
