Tokyo stocks drop 0.59 pct on firmer yen, profit-taking

Tokyo stocks dropped 0.59 percent Tuesday as market sentiment was cooled by the yen's appreciation and profit-taking after recent rallies.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average declined 92.03 points, from Monday at 15,521.22.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange lost 6.30 points, or 0.49 percent, lower at 1, 285.01.

Major decliners included retail, consumer finance and communications shares.

The turnover was 1,531.9 billion yen (about 14.75 billion U.S. dollars).
