Russian Deputy Defence Minister Yuri Borisov on Wednesday has confirmed that the hi-tech Voronezh-DM radar system will begin military operations in Kaliningrad in December.

The new radar will offer the Russian Armed Forces a series of strategic and technical advantages. "The station is certainly not inferior to its foreign counterparts and is in many ways superior, " Borisov told local media during a visit to Kaliningrad earlier Wednesday, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.

Borisov stressed that with the commissioning of the new Kaliningrad radar, Russian missile detection systems will be greatly enhanced.

"There are basically no undisguised missiles that we cannot now detect," Borisov said.

With its ability to detect ballistic missiles at a range of up to 6,000 miles (9,656 kilometers), the radar will cover Russia's entire Western Military District and beyond. Enditem
